The most dreamy hippie backyard wedding took place in Maine on September 29th, 2018. There’s no room for argument here, it was the most badass wedding I’ve been to. As a Colorado-based destination wedding photographer, this was a dream! It was my first time to Maine, and it’s safe to say I’m obsessed. I’ll never forget it for two reasons:

  1. This was my cousin’s wedding, so it meant the world to photograph it.
  2. My hippie self went crazy.

My cousin Brooke has always marched to the own beat of her drum. One time she lived in New Zealand for 2 years to become a skydiving instructor. WUT. She’s a ceramics artist that runs her own business. She and her husband Luke bought this old farmhouse out in the boondocks outside of Portland a few years ago. Luke’s mom made Brooke’s wedding dress by hand. She told me that after the wedding she was going to dye the dress with some indigo they were growing in the backyard. That way, she could wear it every day. ARE YOU KIDDING?! Wedding flower crowns hand-picked from their garden were made for all of the guests to wear. Imagine hand-picked flowers for your wedding day!  She was make-up free and barefoot on her wedding day as my uncle Vick walked her down a long pathway of grass from their house to the end of the property. There was no timeline or rushing involved. No day of wedding planner breathing down our necks and checking their watch. We were on “backyard wedding time”.

We all cried through the vows as Brooke and Luke made lifelong promises to each other surrounded by autumn color trees. Unfortunately, my beautiful aunt has Parkinsons and couldn’t travel from Colorado to the wedding, so thankfully my mom was able to Facetime her during the entire ceremony. The reception consisted of a live local band and dinner was a potluck with vegan, gluten-free, and vegetarian options. Not to mention, all of the waste on the property was composted! Homemade cider and beer were stored in multiple kegs for the guests to try. Oh, and of course, Brooke made mugs for every single guest to take home. It was perfectly unique and relaxed. Their quiet and calm love was wonderful to witness and I wish every wedding could be this true to the bride and groom like this. It was an unforgettable experience and I will never forget it. Congrats Brooke and Luke! You’ve truly set the standard for laidback backyard weddings!
